A 17-year-old Staunton River High School student died in a single car accident on Route 24 in Bedford County Sunday night. Our hearts break for the Staunton River community, who lost two other students to a crash less than a week ago.
Virginia State Police identified the teen as Ashley Barton. Ashley was a junior and a cheerleader at SRHS. Police say she was trying to avoid hitting a deer on Sunday night when her car hit a tree. She was driving a Volkswagen Beetle.
The accident happened at the intersection of Stewartsville Road and Meadows Spur Road.
The Staunton River community is already mourning the loss of two teens, Jacob Baird and Katie Thurston, who were killed on Route 24 last Wednesday when their Mustang and a truck collided.
Funeral services are scheduled for 17 year-old Jacob Baird today at 2:00 p.m. Jacob was a senior at Staunton River High School and played on the varsity football team.
16-year-old Katie Thurston also died in Wednesday’s accident. Katie was a junior at SRHS and a member of the school’s choir. Visitation for Katie is Tuesday with services on Sunday.

The 1st Annual Jacob Baird Invitational was held on Saturday- 9 & 10 and 11 & 12 year old football teams from the area played each other.
