Country's Carrie Underwood is taking on a new role!

Definitely new for Carrie will be a starring role in next year's televised version of The Sound of Music.

According to People magazine, Carrie will play leading lady, Maria von Trapp, on NBC's three hour television broadcast which will be shown around the holidays next year. 

Julie Andrews starred as Maria von Trapp in the 1965 movie which won an Oscar for Best Picture.  

In The Sound of Music, Maria is a nun in an Austrian convent who becomes the governess to seven children after their mother dies. The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers and inludes adventure, romance, and drama.
